Chapter 2 addresses the ethical and legal considerations while the impact of audit on the professionsls and consumers nationally, and in the future.
Are further discussed. A strong link has been established between individual performance review and audit and this is a somewhat unusual connection. Appraisal and objective setting involving an interview process would seem to be a skill in itself and not part of what people normally understand as audit. Various methods of audit are then described including the criterion audit, resource management, and case presentation.
Several case st,udies demonstrate the practical appllcatiolis of audit. I am sure this book will be found useful by people who wish to start the audit process in their departments.Ann Hunter MCSPRight in the Middle - Selective Trunk Activity in the Treatment of Adult Hemiplegiavidescription of content a t the top of each page. This book shows treatment of high-level heniiplegics with few functional problems who can be difficult t o treat, and who are seldom seen, given the limited availability of specialist therapeutic input in this country. Ms Davies stresses the iniportance of precise continuing therapeutic input to maxiniise functional recovery. The author does describe some common problems encountered in performing some of the therapeutic activities, but the importance of adequate and appropriate preparation for the high level skills perhaps could have been afforded more attention.
This elegantly presented and easy-touse book will be useful to therapists in the field of neurology. However, a working knowledge of the Bobath concept is assumed, and it will be best used in conjunction with the more basic text Steps to Follow.

DM 64.This second book by the author of Steps to Follow on the treatment of adult hemiplegia is a progression of Ms Davies’ own interpretation of the Bobath concept. The book is divided into two parts ‘Theoretical antecedents’ and ‘Therapeutic activities’. The first considers normal anatomy and trunk control and problems associated with the loss of selective trunk activity in hemiplegia. The bridge-tentacle as described by Klein-Vogelbach is introduced with reference to the dynamic stabilisation achieved in the normal trunk. There are numerous photographs and references t o the development of trunk control in children and comparisons are made between the problems of lack of control associated with hemiplegia and the high level of control required for truly selective limb activity, and in particular a normal walking pattern, which is only developed a t about seven years of age. The majority of the text describes therapeutic activities clearly and with large black and white photographs. This certainly helps to put pulmonary function testing into context in the management of the respiratory patient as a whole. The author is director of the pulmonaryew8function laboratory in St Louis Univeisity Hospital, Missouri, and the terminology is therefore North American, but the text is easy t,o read with clear diagrams, and this manual could be a helpful reference for the specialist respiratory physiotherapist.Anne Sechiari MCSP Exercise Physiology: Energy, nutrition and human performance by William D McArdle, Frank I Katch and Victor L Katch. The nine appendices provide the standard data for a greater understanding of the previous section. They give details of nutritional values of foodstuffs, metabolic computations, energy expenditure in the home, in recreational and sporting activities.
A useful item is a list of the most frequently cited journals in exercise physiology. The stated primary goal is t o integrate basic concepts and relevant scientific information to provide the foundation frr understanding nutrition, energy transfer and exercise and training. The authors have succeeded admirably. They have also made the text relevant to beginning and advanced students by balancing the discussions of the theoretical foundations with ample documentation and practical applications.

The book has undergone significant modification since the last edition. For example, the latest findings on the performance effects of specific feeding prior to, during and in recovery from exercise are included. The sections on muscle strength and conditioning now include plyometrics and resistance training for children. There are many more areas in which the material has been reworked and expanded to include the latest research. It.is not a work for the faint-hearted, though better than most tomes on exercise physiology.
It still suffers from being large and complex; however, patience brings its rewards. This text is standard to the Advanced Certificate in Sports Physiotherapy and will be familiar to those with more than a passing interest in sports. The book would be a useful addition to the library of schools of physiotherapy and will supplement other standard texts by Guyton and Ganong and texts of pathophysiology. J A Fowler BA MCSP DipTP.
