Install Matrox Codec Vfw Magazine
Install codecs for VirtualDub. Ask Question Asked 9 years, 9 months ago. VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (Vfw) compatible codec to decompress video.

06:10 AM Andreas AnderssonI’m assuming you’re on a PC.Can you play the video file back in Windows Media Player though? If not get DirectX 9.0c from Microsoft. It has a DirectShow filter that will enable playback in WMP.If Premiere still can’t read the file after downloading DirectX 9.0c then it probably means Premiere requires a VFW (Video for Windows) codec (as opposed to a DirectShow one). VFW Motion JPEG codecs are usually pay from third party software vendors, but not too expensive. Here’s some companies that sell themrange from 10 to 30 dollars, with most in the 20 dollar range (not budget busters) and most have free trial periods. There may be others out there like pmatrix (paradigm matrix) or matrox. If you don’t want to spend money, there’s a third solution. Use VirtualDub (www.virtualdub.org), which has its own internal Motion JPEG decoder and convert the file to a different codec (or uncompressed) which Premiere can read.
Here’s some steps:1. Open the file in VirtualDub (or drag the video onto the VirtualDub window)2. Choose Video, Compression3. Pick a codec. You can leave it uncompressed, but the resulting file may be huge. If you pick something other than uncompressed be sure to click on configure to adjust the settings so you can get maximum quality/minimum image degradation.4.
When done click file, save as avi and you’re done5. Feed the output file into premiere. You may want to remind yourself to delete that file after you’re done with the editing, especially if you used uncompressed for codec.

I was sent a video.AVI using a MJPG compression. Are record player needles universal.

Adobe premiere wouldnt open it. Windows media player would play the sound, but the vid was garbled. DIVX player wouldnt play it either. After doing the mentioned above, I saved it as a uncompress Avi and now It plays.
